For much of modern medicine, we have learned to think about the body primarily through the lens of chemistry: hormones, neurotransmitters, genes, enzymes, nutrients, and medications. All of these matter enormously. But they are not the whole story.

Your heart beats because of electrical activity. Your nervous system communicates electrically. Every living cell maintains a voltage across its membrane. Cells respond to mechanical forces and light. The heart and brain produce measurable electrical and magnetic activity. Modern medicine even uses electricity, electromagnetic fields, magnetic stimulation, and light therapeutically.

What follows is a set of short stories from the research literature. Some are firmly established biology. Some are emerging science. Some are proposed models that remain unproven. The point is not to make everything sound settled — it is to be honest about the line between them.

Eleven stories from the edge of biology

1. How does a cell know what to build?

Cut a planarian flatworm in half and it can regenerate missing anatomy — one region builds a head, another a tail. How do collections of cells coordinate toward the correct finished structure? That question sits at the center of developmental bioelectricity. Michael Levin and other researchers study how non-neural cells use membrane voltage and bioelectric networks as signals during development, regeneration, cell migration, and anatomical patterning.

The important takeaway is not that this proves energy healing. It is that electrical information is part of biology itself.

2. Robert Becker and The Body Electric

Decades before today's interest in cellular bioelectricity, orthopedic surgeon and researcher Robert O. Becker investigated electrical activity associated with injury, bone healing, and regeneration. His influential book The Body Electric popularized the idea that endogenous electrical processes may participate in repair rather than merely accompany it.

Not every theory Becker proposed has been established. But the larger importance of bioelectric signaling is now a serious field of research — making Becker a historical bridge between an older "body electric" idea and modern developmental biology.

3. An ancient map meets modern anatomy

Traditional Chinese Medicine described meridians long before modern anatomy understood fascia, peripheral nerves, or mechanotransduction. Modern anatomy has not found literal tubes carrying qi. Yet research by Helene Langevin and Jason Yandow reported a notable relationship between many acupuncture locations they examined and intermuscular or intramuscular connective-tissue planes.

That does not mean "meridians are fascia." It raises a more careful question: could ancient practitioners have empirically mapped biologically responsive locations before their underlying anatomy was understood?

4. Reinhold Voll tries to measure the map

In the mid-20th century, German physician Reinhold Voll developed Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV), measuring skin conductance at selected acupuncture points. Skin conductance is unquestionably measurable, but interpreting those readings as reliable indicators of specific internal-organ dysfunction is a much stronger claim that has not been established.

This is a recurring lesson throughout energy medicine: a measurable observation can be interesting even when the explanation attached to it remains uncertain.

5. The Living Matrix

Biophysicist James Oschman proposed a body-wide "Living Matrix" linking extracellular matrix, cell membranes, and cytoskeletal structures. Parts of that picture align with established mechanobiology: cells physically connect with their surroundings and convert mechanical information into biochemical responses. Oschman's broader energetic and informational interpretation goes further and remains theoretical.

His question is nevertheless useful: how many different channels does the body use to transmit information?

6. Water that behaves differently

Gerald Pollack's work on exclusion-zone water examines unusual behavior of water adjacent to hydrophilic surfaces, including solute exclusion and charge separation. Pollack interprets this as a distinct, ordered "fourth phase" of water. The phenomena have attracted research interest, but his specific structural explanation is not scientific consensus and alternative physical explanations have been proposed.

7. Your body emits light

Living organisms produce extremely faint photon emissions — commonly called ultraweak photon emissions or biophotons. Their existence is measurable, and much of the signal is linked to oxidative and metabolic chemistry. Whether these photons also participate in biological communication remains an open research question.

The careful statement is simple: living systems emit measurable light. This does not establish an aura or a unified subtle-energy network.

8. A Qigong experiment that teaches us how science works

Researchers tested whether experienced external-Qigong practitioners could influence cultured human cells without touching them. An initial controlled series reported a difference. A larger replication did not reproduce the effect. That doesn't make the experiment uninteresting — it makes it valuable. Unusual findings must survive replication before they can support an unusual mechanism.

9. Energy4Life moves the question into the laboratory

Energy4Life grew from Peter Fraser's proposed Human Body-Field model. E4L now publishes a research collection that includes laboratory work, HRV projects, and real-world wellness data. Its cell research reports measurable cellular endpoints under experimental Infoceutical conditions.

These findings are best regarded as exploratory and preliminary. They do not prove Fraser's Human Body-Field model or establish medical diagnostic or therapeutic benefit. Independent replication would be especially valuable.

10. Homeopathy and the information question

Homeopathy raises one of the most controversial questions in this entire discussion: what could remain biologically meaningful after serial dilution? Researchers have explored ideas involving nanoparticles, hormesis, and solution chemistry. Nanoparticles of starting metals have been reported in some highly diluted metal-derived preparations, but this does not explain classical homeopathy broadly. Clinical evidence remains contested, and major health agencies do not consider homeopathy established treatment for health conditions.

11. A flower essence and an ECG

In a small 2021 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults with moderate-to-high anxiety received either a Bach flower combination or placebo for four weeks. The investigators reported differences favoring the flower group in anxiety, sleep, binge-eating scores, and resting heart rate measured by ECG. Other controlled studies have not consistently shown effects beyond placebo. An intriguing small study — not proof of a specific mechanism.

Modern medicine is also becoming more "energetic"

Modern healthcare already uses physical energy in highly defined ways: electrical neuromodulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, photobiomodulation, selected PEMF applications, electrical bone stimulation, and Tumor Treating Fields. In February 2026, the FDA approved a device delivering alternating electric fields for certain adults with locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

These technologies do not validate every energy-medicine theory. They establish a more limited — and important — principle: biology can be influenced through precisely characterized physical inputs, not only through drugs and nutrients.

What science says — a spectrum, not a yes/no

  • Well established Electrophysiology, bioelectric signaling, mechanotransduction, photobiology, and biological responses to specific electrical and electromagnetic interventions.
  • Developing therapeutic science Bioelectronic medicine, neuromodulation, photobiomodulation, and selected electromagnetic-field applications.
  • Emerging questions Interfacial water, biophotons, electrical properties of acupuncture points, connective-tissue signaling, and broader biofield research.
  • Proposed models Oschman's broader Living Matrix, Pollack's fourth-phase interpretation, Fraser's Human Body-Field, subtle-energy models, and informational interpretations of highly diluted preparations.

How I approach bioenergetic wellness

My approach is intentionally clear about these distinctions. I do not use complementary or bioenergetic wellness services to diagnose disease, determine medical treatment, or replace appropriate healthcare. I offer them as supportive wellness practices for exploration, self-awareness, emotional reflection, and whole-person wellbeing.

None needs to be presented as "proven by bioelectricity" in order to be offered transparently as a complementary wellness experience.
